PROLOGUE
Today, she would either fix her marriage or end it.
That thought washed over her as Diane felt the rain pattering on her umbrella. It was early morning and the sun hadn't risen yet, but she was eager to get home. She walked with purpose along the deserted and darkened street ahead, fueled by the desire to mend or cut the broken threads of her life.
She would only have the answer when she made it home.
The dark skies above glistened in the puddles of water on the sidewalks and road. Diane kept looking for the first hint of sunrise in the murky, inch-thin water, but not a single ray of sunlight was visible yet.
If I get there before the sun is up, she thought, I might catch James before he goes to work.
She picked up the pace and felt the cold air moving in and out of her lungs. Crossing the empty road, she looked left and right, and listened for traffic, a habit from when she was a child. Somewhere in the distance, a low hum could be heard of cars and their drivers making their way to early morning shifts, but on that street, not one headlight could be seen.
The quiet unnerved Diane. She couldn't be certain whether it was the lack of people or the lack of love in her life, which bubbled away in her gut. Either way, she was unsettled. Her marriage was on life support, and this was one last attempt to salvage something of it.
James had started the argument the night before. He had come in from his usual workout at the gym and plonked himself down onto the couch. He had barely said a single word to Diane.
She tried to chat with him, to make idle conversation, but he seemed more interested in watching TV than having anything but the most cursory chat with the woman he had married eight years before.
Eight years, she thought, as she turned down another rain swept street.
Where had those years gone? What had they done to the two lovers who had once promised each other the world.
The days, weeks, months, years - they had eroded the love between them like a relentless sea carving out a hollow cave.
Diane felt the tears welling up in her eyes again. She'd been up with her sister all night, going over the wreckage of the marriage, confessing how bad things really were between her and James. She was surprised she had any tears left.
Things had escalated the night before when Diane told James she was going to go and have a few drinks with her sister. He flew off the handle about it, even accused her of seeing someone else.
That was what hurt the most. James should have known how loyal Diane was. She then told him how unwanted she felt and that he was always pushing her away.
The argument then got out of hand and James stormed into the kitchen and smashed a plate against the wall in anger. That was it for Diane. She would put up with a lot of things, but not violence like that.
She grabbed her coat and headed out. What should have been a relaxing catch up with her sister over a few drinks turned into a confession. Diane had always kept up the appearance that her marriage was healthy, but all that pretense was gone.
Diane reached a crossroads, and now for the first time she saw traffic on the road. The occasional dancing headlights of a delivery truck or early morning go-getter passed by, whipping up a mist of rain in the air as it drove.
Part of her wished to be away from everything, to head down that long road and be gone from the car crash of her life. But that wasn't Diane. She was a fighter. And if there was anything left in James that loved her, well, she was willing to fight for that, too.
Filled with defiance, she headed across the street to a row of terraced houses. There it was. Number 9 Moorefield Street.
